Although many believe it is a common insect that appears by chance, the drain fly—also known as the shower fly or sewer fly—is often a sign of an underlying issue within your home’s plumbing system. Its small size and slow flight make it initially go unnoticed, but when it starts appearing frequently in the bathroom or near the sink, it can become a constant nuisance.
This curious insect tends to settle in places with accumulated moisture, organic waste, and poor ventilation. That is why the bathroom is one of its favorite spots. Although in most cases it does not pose a serious health risk, it can indicate cleaning or maintenance problems that should be resolved as soon as possible.
The shower fly has a very distinct appearance. It is generally small, gray or dark brown, and has wings with a texture similar to that of a small moth. Unlike other flies, it usually does not fly long distances. It typically remains close to drains, damp walls, drain grates, or areas where condensation forms.
Many people initially notice small insects resting on bathroom walls or near the sink. Others notice an unpleasant odor coming from the pipes and, shortly after, discover the presence of these midges. In some homes, it is also observed that water takes longer to drain, which can further encourage their appearance.
