DIY Translucent Cornstarch Glass Ornaments

These delicate, translucent ornaments look like artisan sea glass or stained glass hanging in a sunny window, but they are crafted from just three simple household ingredients: cornstarch, baking soda, and water. The resulting smooth dough air-dries into a matte, ceramic-like finish that beautifully diffuses light—making these perfect for holiday decor, window hangings, or garlands.

Ingredients & Tools

• Ceramic-Mimic Dough:

  • Cornstarch: 1 cup (delivers a fine, smooth surface)

  • Baking Soda: 1 cup (prevents cracking and adds a frosted-glass look)

  • Filtered Water: ¾ cup

• Tools & Finishing:

  • Food coloring (liquid or gel, kept light/pastel)

  • Cookie cutters (hearts, flowers, or geometric shapes)

  • Parchment paper (essential for rolling and drying)

  • Saucepan & wooden spoon/silicone spatula

  • Drinking straw or toothpick (for punching hanging holes)

  • Optional: Fine glitter, metallic paint, ribbon, and Mod Podge or clear acrylic sealant

The Science: Starch Gelatinization & Light Diffusion

• Gelatinization Network: Heating cornstarch in water at 62°C–70°C (144°F–158°F) causes starch granules to swell and burst. This releases polymer chains into the liquid, forming a pliable hydrogel.

• Frosted-Glass Effect: As the dough air-dries over 24–48 hours, water evaporates, packing starch and baking soda into a high-density matrix. This uniform structure lets light pass through in a diffused state, mimicking sea glass.

• The ¼-Inch Rule: Roll the dough precisely ¼-inch thick. Thicker shapes become opaque and block light, while thinner shapes will warp or crack as they dry.
