You are sleeping deeply when suddenly your partner wakes you up and tells you that you were talking in your sleep again. You don’t remember anything. No dream, no words, nothing. Yet apparently you had a full conversation with someone who wasn’t there. It feels strange, even a little unsettling. Are you stressed? Is something wrong with your brain? Could it mean something deeper?

Stay with me until the end, because what science discovered about this will completely change the way you see your nights.

What Is Sleep Talking and How Common Is It?

Sleep talking, or somniloquy, is more common than most people think. Studies show that 1 in 2 people will talk in their sleep at least once in their life. Children do it more frequently, but millions of adults experience it regularly without even knowing it.

The strange part? Most sleep talkers have absolutely no memory of it the next morning. You could have an entire conversation, argue, laugh, or even whisper secrets — and wake up with zero recollection.

What Is Your Brain Actually Doing?

Here is where it gets fascinating.

Your brain never fully shuts down during sleep. It goes through different stages — light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep — cycling through them every 90 minutes. Sleep talking most commonly happens during two specific moments:

  • During REM sleep — when your brain is extremely active and you are dreaming. Your brain is essentially “acting out” the dream, and sometimes the words escape before your body can stop them.
  • During deep sleep (Stage 3) — when the brain is in its heaviest recovery mode. Words that come out during this stage are usually mumbled, random, and make no sense at all.

The interesting part is that your brain has a natural mechanism called muscle atonia during REM sleep — it paralyzes your body so you don’t physically act out your dreams. But this system is not always perfect. Sometimes words slip through. Sometimes even full sentences.
