In darkness, with minimal visual information, it fills in the gaps with the most familiar shape it knows — a human figure.
2. Hypnagogia — this is the transitional state between wakefulness and sleep. Shadow figures, moving shapes, and even full hallucinations are extremely common during hypnagogia and are considered completely normal by sleep scientists.
3. Peripheral vision sensitivity — the edges of your vision are far more sensitive to movement and contrast than the center. In darkness, your central vision becomes almost useless, so your brain relies entirely on peripheral vision. This part of your eye has almost no color detection and is highly sensitive to any change in light — making it very easy to “see” movement that isn’t really there.
