Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C), placing the baking rack in the exact center slot. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter and dust lightly with flour, or line the bottom and sides with parchment paper.

2. Cream the Butter and Sugar

In a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the 1 cup of softened butter and 1½ cups of granulated sugar on medium-high speed for 3 to 4 minutes until pale yellow, fluffy, and voluminous.

3. Emulsify the Wet Ingredients

Add the 4 room-temperature eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly for 30 seconds after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a silicone spatula. Stir in the 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract until fully integrated.

4. Alternate Dry and Wet Additions

In a separate bowl, whisk together the 3 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of baking soda, and ½ teaspoon of salt. With the mixer running on low speed, add one-third of the flour mixture, followed by half of the buttermilk. Repeat, ending with the final third of the flour. Mix just until the dry pockets disappear—do not overmix.

5. Bake to Golden Maturity

Pour the batter into your prepared 9×13-inch pan and smooth the top surface with an offset spatula. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden-brown and a wooden toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

6. Prepare the Warm Glaze

About 10 minutes before the cake finishes baking, combine the ½ cup of butter, 1 cup of brown sugar, ½ cup of buttermilk, and a pinch of salt in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring constantly, for 3 to 4 minutes until the sugar dissolves and the liquid thickens slightly. Remove from heat and stir in the 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

7. Poke, Saturate, and Cool

The instant the cake comes out of the oven, use a wooden skewer or fork to poke holes across the entire top surface at 1-inch intervals. Slowly pour the warm buttermilk sauce evenly over the hot cake, allowing it to soak into the interior channels. Let the cake rest undisturbed in the pan for at least 30 minutes before slicing.

Storage and Preservation Metrics

  • Room Temperature Storage: Keep the cake covered tightly inside the baking dish at room temperature for up to 2 to 3 days. The high sugar and butter content of the glaze protects the crumb from drying out.

  • Refrigeration & Reheating: Store leftover slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. To serve, warm individual slices in the microwave for 15 seconds to reactivate the butter fats and soften the glaze.
